Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water or beef broth
  • 4 burger buns

Instructions

Heat the pan

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until warm and ready for cooking.

Cook the onion

  • Add chopped onion and cook until soft and slightly golden. This builds a strong flavor base.

Add garlic

  • Add minced garlic and cook for one minute until fragrant. Be careful not to burn it.

Cook the beef

  • Add ground beef to the pan. Cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces while cooking evenly.

Drain excess fat

  • Remove extra fat from the pan if needed. This keeps the dish from becoming too greasy.

Add sauce ingredients

  • Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, paprika, salt and pepper. Mix everything well.

Add liquid

  • Pour in water or broth. Stir well to combine and create a smooth sauce.

Simmer the mixture

  • Cook on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps the flavors blend and thicken.

Assemble and serve

  • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto buns. Serve warm and enjoy the juicy and flavorful sandwich.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey for a lighter option
  • Add chopped bell peppers for extra flavor
  • Use BBQ sauce for a smoky twist
  • Add chili flakes for spice
  • Toast buns for better texture
  • Add cheese for a richer taste
  • Use brioche buns for softness
