Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes optional for heat
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

Heat the Oil

  • Place a saucepan on medium heat. Add olive oil and let it warm slowly for even cooking.

Cook Onion

  • Add chopped onion to the pan. Cook until soft and slightly golden for sweet flavor base.

Add Garlic

  • Stir in minced garlic. Cook for one minute until fragrant but do not burn it.

Add Ketchup Base

  • Pour ketchup into the pan. Stir well to mix with onions and garlic evenly.

Add Seasonings

  • Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, mustard, paprika, black pepper and chili flakes. Mix thoroughly.

Add Sweetness

  • Add brown sugar slowly. Stir until fully dissolved and sauce becomes smooth and slightly glossy.

Add Vinegar and Water

  • Pour in apple cider vinegar and water. Stir gently to balance thickness and flavor depth.

Simmer Sauce

  • Lower heat and let sauce simmer for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Adjust Flavor

  • Taste the sauce carefully. Add salt, sugar or vinegar if needed for perfect balance.

Blend for Smoothness

  • Use a whisk or blender if you prefer smooth texture. This step is optional.

Cool the Sauce

  • Remove pan from heat. Let sauce cool for a few minutes before serving or storing.

Store Properly

  • Transfer sauce into a clean jar. Keep refrigerated for up to one week safely.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic for stronger and richer flavor.
  • Add honey instead of brown sugar for softer sweetness.
  • For smoky taste, add extra smoked paprika or chipotle powder.
  • Blend sauce for a smooth steakhouse-style finish.
  • Let sauce rest overnight for deeper flavor.
  • Add a splash of lemon juice for brightness.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to control salt level.
  • Adjust chili flakes for spicy or mild version.
  • Pair with grilled meats for best taste experience.
  • Always simmer on low heat to avoid burning sugars.
