Ingredients
  

For the Cake:

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of 2 medium oranges
  • 1 cup whole milk

For the Ganache:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 oz dark chocolate chopped
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
  

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease the cake pans and line them with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk them together well.

Cream Butter and Sugar

  • In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 3–4 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla

  • Add eggs one at a time. Mix well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract and orange zest.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Add half of the dry mix to the butter mixture. Pour in half the milk. Mix gently until smooth.

Repeat the Mixing

  • Add remaining dry ingredients and milk. Mix until fully combined. Do not overmix the batter.

Divide Batter in Pans

  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.

Bake the Cakes

  • Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Cool the Cakes

  • Remove from oven. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack completely.

Prepare the Ganache

  • Heat heavy cream in a saucepan until simmering. Pour over chopped chocolate. Stir until smooth. Add butter and vanilla.

Assemble the Cake

  • Place one cake layer on a plate. Spread some ganache over the top. Add second cake layer.

Frost the Cake

  • Pour remaining ganache over the top and sides. Smooth with a spatula for even coating.

Chill Before Serving

  • Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes. This helps the ganache set perfectly.
