Ingredients

  • 4 cups green cabbage shredded
  • 1 cup red cabbage shredded
  • 1 large carrot grated
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard optional

Instructions

Prepare the Vegetables

  • Wash the cabbage and carrot well. Shred the green and red cabbage finely. Grate the carrot using a box grater.

Combine the Vegetables

  • Place shredded cabbage and grated carrot into a large bowl. Toss gently with salad tongs until everything mixes evenly.

Make the Dressing

  • In a small bowl, add mayonnaise, vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, salt and pepper. Whisk well until the dressing becomes smooth.

Add Dijon Mustard

  • Stir Dijon mustard into the dressing for extra flavor. This ingredient is optional but adds a nice tangy depth.

Pour Dressing Over Vegetables

  • Slowly pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture. Use a spoon or tongs to coat all vegetables evenly.

Mix the Coleslaw

  • Toss the mixture gently until every piece of cabbage becomes covered with the creamy dressing.

Taste and Adjust

  • Taste the coleslaw. Add extra salt, pepper or vinegar if needed to match your preferred flavor.

Chill the Coleslaw

  • Cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator. Chill for at least one hour to develop the flavor.

Toss Before Serving

  • Remove from the refrigerator and toss again lightly. This helps redistribute the dressing evenly.

Serve Fresh

  • Serve the coleslaw chilled as a side dish with barbecue, sandwiches, or grilled meats.

Notes

  • Use very fresh cabbage for the best crunch.
  • Slice cabbage thinly for better texture.
  • Let the coleslaw chill at least one hour before serving.
  • Add chopped green onions for extra flavor.
  • Mix in shredded apples for a sweet twist.
  • Add celery seeds for a traditional coleslaw flavor.
  • Use Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise for a lighter dressing.
  • Add chopped parsley for fresh color and taste.
