Ingredients
  

  • 1 kg potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese optional

Instructions
  

Preheat the oven

  • Set oven to 180°C. Grease a baking dish lightly with butter.

Slice the potatoes

  • Cut potatoes into thin, even slices for uniform cooking and soft texture.

Make the sauce base

  • Melt butter in a saucepan. Add flour and cook for one minute while stirring.

Add milk and cream

  • Slowly whisk in milk and cream. Stir until smooth and slightly thickened.

Add seasoning and cheese

  • Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and cheddar cheese. Stir until melted.

Layer potatoes

  • Place a layer of potatoes in the baking dish. Pour some sauce over it.

Repeat layers

  • Continue layering potatoes and sauce until all ingredients are used.

Bake covered

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes until potatoes start to soften.

Bake uncovered

  • Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Rest and serve

  • Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving for best texture.

Notes

  • Use Yukon gold potatoes for creamy texture
  • Add bacon for smoky flavor
  • Use Gruyère cheese for richer taste
  • Slice potatoes very thin for faster cooking
  • Add fresh thyme for aroma
