Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • 1/4 cup shortening cubed
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 tsp sugar optional, for slight sweetness

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar. Mix well.

Cut in Butter and Shortening

  • Add cold butter and shortening. Use a pastry cutter or fork. Mix until crumbly, pea-sized pieces remain.

Add Buttermilk

  • Pour cold buttermilk into the mixture. Stir gently until dough forms. Avoid overmixing.

Knead the Dough Lightly

  • Turn dough onto a floured surface. Knead gently 2–3 times until smooth.

Roll Out the Dough

  • Roll dough to about 1-inch thickness. Dust lightly with flour to prevent sticking.

Cut Biscuits

  • Use a biscuit cutter to cut rounds. Gather scraps, reroll, and cut additional biscuits.

Bake Until Golden

  • Place biscuits on the prepared sheet. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

Cool Slightly and Serve

  • Let biscuits cool 5 minutes. Serve warm with butter, honey, or jam.

Notes

  • Keep butter and buttermilk cold for the flakiest biscuits.
  • Handle dough gently; overworking can make them tough.
  • Try half butter, half shortening for classic southern texture.
  • Add shredded cheese or herbs for a savory twist.
  • Brush tops with melted butter after baking for extra richness.
