Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg

For Garlic Butter Topping:

  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan lightly with butter or cooking spray.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, garlic powder, salt, and sugar until evenly combined.

Cut in Cold Butter

  • Add cold butter cubes to dry mixture. Use a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cheese

  • Stir shredded cheddar cheese into the flour mixture. Mix gently to distribute cheese evenly.

Combine Wet Ingredients

  • In a small bowl, whisk milk and egg together until fully blended and smooth.

Form the Dough

  • Pour wet ingredients into dry mixture. Stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix the dough.

Transfer to Pan

  • Spoon dough into prepared loaf pan. Smooth the top lightly with a spatula for even baking.

Bake the Loaf

  • Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown. Insert toothpick in center; it should come out clean.

Prepare Garlic Butter

  • While loaf bakes, melt butter in a small saucepan. Stir in garlic powder and chopped parsley.

Brush with Garlic Butter

  • Remove loaf from oven. Immediately brush warm garlic butter generously over the top for flavor.
  • Cool and Slice
  • Let loaf cool 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm for best texture and taste.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting and flavor.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne for a spicy kick.
  • Replace cheddar with Monterey Jack for a milder taste.
  • Sprinkle extra cheese on top before baking for a cheesy crust.
  • For extra softness, add one tablespoon sour cream to the dough.
