Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 500 g ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the Mashed Potato Topping:

  • 4 large potatoes peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare Mashed Potatoes

  • Boil peeled potatoes in salted water until tender. Mash with butter, milk, salt and pepper.

Cook the Meat

  • Heat olive oil in skillet. Add onions and garlic. Cook until soft. Add ground lamb and brown thoroughly.

Add Vegetables

  • Add diced carrots and peas. Stir and cook for 5 minutes until slightly tender.

Make Gravy

  • Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, pepper and broth. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.

Preheat Oven

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F) while preparing the filling.

Assemble Shepherd’s Pie

  • Spread meat and vegetable mixture evenly in baking dish. Spoon mashed potatoes on top. Smooth with spatula.

Create Texture

  • Use fork to create lines or peaks in mashed potatoes. This helps golden browning.

Bake the Pie

  • Place in oven and bake 25–30 minutes until mashed potatoes are golden and edges bubbling.

Rest Before Serving

  • Remove from oven. Let pie rest 5 minutes for easier serving.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Scoop generous portions onto plates. Serve with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Use lamb for authentic shepherd’s pie, beef for cottage pie variation.
  • Add mushrooms for earthy flavor.
  • Use cream in mashed potatoes for extra richness.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheese on top for cheesy crust.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate; bake later when ready to serve.
  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for creamy texture.
  • Season generously; flavor is key to comfort food.
